Storage
Sleeping soundly is easier when the clutter is taken care of. Organise your bedroom with these clever products designed to accommodate clothes, books and more.

- Hem Bedside Table in Blush John Lewis
Where to source good bedside tables is one of the great mysteries of life. I often go vintage as that brings an element of character and patina to a room that tends to be full of softness. But when you do find a good contemporary design you need to strike as soon as you can. And here we are - £129 with a fashionable scallop and lots of storage. It’s made from rubberwood and MDF, which means you can easily paint it if you change your décor. Also comes in cream.
- Alessio metal bedside table La Redoute
Bedside tables are notoriously tricky to get right. The default seems to be shabby chic, and that just ain’t for all of us. This sleek metal version, in either on-trend terracotta or classic black, is both sculptural and has good storage. It’s also reversible - in that you can choose which way faces out so you have have books at the front and a secret shelf at the back or vice-versa. And there’s no need to confine it to the bedroom, either. Would work well at the end of the sofa with all those remote controls tucked away out of sight (and possibly mind).
- Adrian iron side table Perch & Parrow
For those who feel that bedrooms can be a little soft with all that upholstery and bedding, it can help to bring a bit of tension to the scheme – and this iron cabinet will cut through all the fluffy stuff. Of course it would work in a home office, but next to a floral duvet cover it will look fantastic. Plus, the top has a lip to stop the water sliding off the edge and there’s masses of storage for all those unsightly boxes of tissues and extra chargers and general “stuff” that one seems to accumulate. Buy a pair and watch them move happily around the house for years to come. You can probably even paint them if you fancied a change.
- Componibili Storage Unit Heal's
A successful interior design scheme mixes materials as well as colours and given that most furniture is made of wood, unless it’s upholstered it can be hard to introduce variety. These classic storage units bring both colour and texture. They used to come in rather primary colours, but olive green is a gorgeous muted shade that will look great in a neutral scheme – and will sit happily next to wood – as well as making friends with all shades of pink, blue and yellow. Also – masses of storage. I have had two black ones for years – they began as bedside tables and have now moved to my son’s room where they store a huge amount of stuff I dare not ask about. But, big, adaptable, useful. In the as yet un-added category “can’t go wrong with this”.
- Rattan-drawer bedside table H&M
I quite like the discipline of a single drawer – and if you had a pair of these I think they could work well in a sitting room too, either at both ends of the sofa or next to each other as a sort of disconnected single unit. This one also comes in natural wood colour as well as black, but be aware that it’s 60 per cent MDF and 30 per cent wood – which is how they've kept the price below £150.
- Harlosh side table Pinch
This by Pinch Design would happily work in the sitting room as well as the bedroom, so you might feel it's a sensible choice. It's 610cm high and 43cm deep and wide – significantly bigger than most bedside tables, so you may need a bigger bedroom. Or a smaller bed, which is one way to sort out your priorities.
- Fumed Oak table Christopher Howe
This really is a pretty fluted table by Christopher Howe. The wavy top will stop things falling off the edge – perfect for the in-the-dark-grope to turn the phone over so you can see the time – while the storage below has lots of space for a pile of books or slightly hidden from view beauty products. Pricey, but lovely.
- Solidus bedside table La Redoute
This is a much more modern look from La Redoute and is made from sustainable Suar wood, which is similar to teak but has a stronger grain. It’s 52cm high and 30cm square. If you like lots of storage but fear losing things in the deep dark recesses of drawers this could be the one for you. It also comes in a natural finish and is perfect for stacking books current and future, notebooks, handcream and lipsalve as well as a glass of water and the charging station. It’s a way of being very organised and very tidy in a minimal and attractive way.
- Wooden bedside table Zara Home
Bedside tables tend to be ruled immediately in or out according to their size. This from Zara is 55cm high, 38cm wide and 30cm deep. It's big enough for a lamp and a book as well as a clock/phone and its charger and I have to say I would be tempted to feed the business end of my charging cable through the rattan on the bottom shelf to hold it in place and stop it flopping onto the floor when not being used. I also like the glass top, which gives the whole thing an air of lightness so it won’t make what can be a small space feel fuller and darker. At £189.99, this might be my favourite.

- Warwick Bedside Table Soho Home
I have long turned to vintage when it comes to bedside tables as so many of them fall into the cheap and shabby chic category, but I make an exception for this. It’s crafted from burl veneer, which creates a really lovely pattern, and the recessed handle is a gorgeous detail. It’s 55cm wide and 52cm high and is a piece to love forever for sure.
