Desks
Working at home needn’t be a drag. Spending the day (or even the odd power-hour) behind an elegant desk will take the grind out of your 9-5. And these are all up to the job.

- Set of 2 Gary Office Trestles designed by E. Gallina La Redoute
These trestle legs in wood and leather are a great way to create your own dining table. Either buy your own piece of tempered glass or wood or use a vintage door or length of worktop. Works well as a desk too.
- Noya Vintage Desk with Rattan Panels La Redoute
If your home office has to multi-task with another room or you live in a student bedsit then a desk with a natural screen is a brilliant idea. The rattan panels are on trend but it also means, if you position it right, that you can hide your work away at end end of the day without really having to tidy up or put it away as the panels will disguise it all for you. The panels are reversible so you can adapt to suit you and means you can also move it to different rooms and different layouts should the need arise.
- Junius Walnut Linoleum Desk La Redoute
This desk appears to be 50 per cent off at the time of writing (reduced from £1,100) so if you like it you better move fast. The styling is super simple and classic so it will work in a sitting room – add a pretty lamp for the evening and slide a laptop and paperwork into the drawer – or in the bedroom where it can do double duty as a dressing table. It’s made from walnut – move over oak we’re all about this darker pinkier tone now – with a lino top, which is made from linseed and therefore natural and sustainable. There is also a removeable cable location spot. This might be an investment but it will travel happily round several rooms in the house so you can use it forever
- Bruton double drawer desk The Dormy House
We tend not to think of painted wooden desks but if yours is sharing space with a bedroom or you want to add a cheery splash of colour to a sitting room then why not pick a desk with a colour that you love. So you can have this, where the work has been done for you, or you can buy an old pine table, or desk, and paint it yourself in the colour of your choice. And then you can change it if you move it to another room.
- Chinon antique oak desk Oka
It’s an investment piece but one that you will use for years and years whether it’s a desk for now and an occasional table later, or something that is passed down to a child or younger member of the family in their first home. The style is classic, the legs are slim, there are storage drawers but the really clever bit? A shelf that slides out at either end for those days when you are working two to a desk, or need an extra screen or even more paperwork.
- Soren desk John Lewis
WFH isn’t going away any time soon and our houses aren’t getting any bigger. This slim line mid-century inspired desk is perfect for an office which has to share with a bedroom or sitting room. The narrow legs mean it won’t dominate the space, the drawers can be switched to the side that suits you best and mean you can slide the work stuff away at the end of the day if you need to turn it into a dressing table or just leave it blank with a good lamp for the evening.
- Tiptoe New Modern Desk Made In Design
You can find the individual legs that clamp onto any top over in outdoors and dining tables, but this is a desk from French company Tiptoe. The powder-coated steel legs (infinitely recyclable) are covered in epoxy paint (made from eco-friendly resin) while the top can be chosen from either eco-certified wood, recycled or laminate plastic, made from waste yoghurt pots meaning each one has different bursts of colour. They come in lots of different sizes and are flat-packed to reduce storage and space while shipping. Would also work brilliantly as a dining table and you could buy some legs separately to create your own bench or stool seating.
- Magosia Solid Walnut Desk La Redoute
One of those valueable crossover pieces that will be useful for years and years. Use it as I have here as a dressing table that might make a place to WFH too. Move it into the sitting room (as shown on the site) to double up as a console table and desk or, finally, if you have an office, it's made for in there and you can use it for a desk top computer and keep pens in one place in the drawer. Another reason I like it? No brass tips on the legs. This is a pet hate but invariably makes things look cheaper and will date. This is simple, pared back, more classic and will therefore stand the test of time. Homily over.
- Reclaimed wooden desk Esty
There's something very elegant and simple about this desk with its single drawer as the only embellisment. You can choose the size (they will even alter it to fit specifically for your needs so you can have it deeper or shallower depending on where you need it to go. A desk this minimal is surely an encouragement to work more tidily, or procrastinate for a while styling the top of it.

- Trapeze Desk John Lewis & Partners
If you are the type to have several tabs open on your computer this double layered desk might appeal to you -put open books/notepads and paperwork that you are using for reference underneath so you can see them when needed and keep the active stuff - pen, pad, computer and coffee on the top layer. It's double the working space in the same floor space. And if you're a tidy worker, use the underneath to display gorgeous pens and inspiring pictures!
