Armchairs & Footstools
When you’re sitting solo, you’ll want to be comfortable and well supported. This edit has options for all locations in the home.

- Urban Renewal Vintage 19th Century Victorian Flame Mahogany Armchair Urban Outfitters
So Urban Outfitters appears to have gone into vintage which is a clever idea. This is from the 19th century and is sold as seen. I’ve seen it and I like it. Obviously, the numbers are limited and it’s a first come first served. It’s a good idea and I wonder if it will take off. There’s quite a good selection although you might, of course, find similar things more cheaply through your usual vintage channels but as a way to introduce a new audience to the joy of vintage, it’s inspired.
- Petite Bobbin Chair John Lewis
Small accent chairs are incredibly useful as they don’t take up much room in a corner so you can use them in bedrooms as chairdrobes, on landings or tucking in to the sitting room for occasional seating – admittedly you might not want to sit on one like this with no arms for an entire evening of TV. Bobbin woodwork is currenty fashionable but, again, it’s a classic so this chair will be around long after the fashion wagon has moved on and you can, of course, always change the cushions to suit your décor.
- Tarma armchair sheki olive Oka
When it comes to the big pieces of furniture, we don’t use pattern nearly enough. The tendency is to buy plain and add cushions, but I think if you love a pattern you love a pattern and you are unlikely to go off it. Instead, it can become a starting point for a scheme. Buy this chair (or a pair) and team it with a plain pink or green sofa. Or cover another chair in pink and green stripes to coordinate without matching. Add plain cushions to knock it back a bit. This is pink and green, which is my sort of colours, but there is a blue and cream one too so all bases are covered.
- SPIN STOOL Connox
This is a beauty. Made from mango wood it’s gently curving shape is simple but stylish and it’s one of the most versatile pieces of furniture you can buy. Use it as a side table in the sitting room, a bedside table or an extra stool it’s worth the investment as it’s one of those pieces of furniture that will be useful your whole life whatever the size of your home. It’s made from 100% FSC-certified mango wood and, if you buy from this link is 100 per cent climate neutral shipping
- BOBO ARMCHAIR Made
Curves and the so-called fat furniture is having a moment and there’s no doubt that in a room full of rectangles and straight lines, it’s a great way to soften a space. The question is how to make it look cool and classic rather than just part of a passing fad. The answer is to cover the whole chair in velvet (recycled since you ask) so it’s not just the cushions and the back but the legs and arms as well. For a contemporary look (if you don’t have small children) buy the cream boucle, for a more long-term look pick the navy. I’d like one of each.
- Marni armchair Anthropologie
While arm and accent chairs can be a good way to introduce pattern into a room if that isn’t your vibe then think about texture. These chairs are covered in boucle (beware cat owners though) in ivory, chocolate and forest green. Buy a matching pair or a non-matching pair and move them around as required. One important note is that narrow arms means the chair will look smaller and more elegant and give you more sitting space. The curved arms are a pleasing nod to the current curvy fashion while still remaining classic enough not to go out of date. They’re made in Nottingham, UK by the way. There’s a sofa to match too although I would probably suggest one or the other.
- Bedford Accent Armchair & Footstool Made
A genuine Eames or Le Corbusier is out of reach of most of us but this mid-century style lounger with matching footstool is a classic design made by Danish firm By Georgsen and is guaranteed for 10 years. It comes in either navy or ivory boucle and will suit most interiors. Perfect for those of you with a home office who like to take a break from their desk in the afternoon
- Low Lounge Chair H&M
Fast becoming a modern classic this low slung rattan chair sells out fast and is, so far, regularly restocked. It's a great piece but, be warned, I have sat in one and it is low. But it would be great in the corner of a sitting room or a bedroom, come to that, where it would make a great chairdrobe.
- Curved velvet armchair Rockett St George
A deep curving armchair with slim arms which give it a more elegant feel as it's not too chunky. It's 90cm wide but 102cm deep so make sure you have the space if you want to sit it across a corner or at an angle. Here it's in grey velvet but there are 16 other colours to choose from. It takes 12 weeks as it's made to order and there are no returns so make sure you order fabric samples before committing.

- French Style Wicker Chair Rockett St George
This is one of those really useful bits of furniture. If you have enough space at the kitchen table it will look great (and be comfortable)there. Wtih a small cushion for the back it will withstand some WFH and it will also work well in the bedroom as a chair-drobe. But if you have a corner of a landing or hall where you like to sit and take five it's perfect for that and, finally, in a few weeks' time when the spring has sprung you can take it outside for a cup of coffee and spot of Vitamin D.
